Eulogy to a Dog

June 16, 2011 2 comments

My mind couldn’t face nor accept the truth of human’s cruelty to animals because the thought of it simply disgust me. Where are the compassionate in those humans who are part of the animal testing organisation. Just because our dogs cannot speak, don’t they have their right of life. Dogs ain’t breed for lab testing subjects, they are human companions. Ever wonder how dogs become known as man’s best friend. There are several explanations found on the web. But only one speaks truely of it’s meaning.

The greatest claim to fame of Warrensburg, Missouri is that it is where the phrase ‘a dog is a man’s best friend’ originated. In 1870, a farmer shot a neighbour’s dog and, in the subsequent court case where the owner sued for damages, the lawyer George Graham Vest gave a tear-jerking speech that became known as the Eulogy to a Dog:

“Gentlemen of the jury, a man’s dog stands by him in prosperity and poverty, in health and sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground, where the wintry winds blow, and the snow drives fiercely, if only he can be near his master’s side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer; he will lick the wounds and sores that come in encounter with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince. When all other friends desert, he remains. When riches take wings and reputation falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through the heavens.” – And so on… (Source: Pharse Finder)

My heart sank and bitter sweet tears fell with joy when I watch this video. Beagles being caged up in the tiny space for all their life finally given a new leash of life with the team efforts of Beagle Freedom Project. The uncertainty sense through your eyes and having to reach out their first step to the real world simply felt overwhelmed. Everyone can make a difference, one dog at a time.

Le Le Is Cool

June 3, 2011 2 comments

Having to reside in sunny Singapore, it is summer all year round. Lele almost got a ride every other day when mummi sent pappi to work in the car. I’m gulity leaving lele alone in the car once at petrol kiosk where I need to make payment at the cashier counter. Before walking off, I winded down a gap between the windows and ask the attendant to look out for lele. I felt awful when I walked back to the car and the attendant told me she was whinning and howling out for me. Therefore I told myself there is no next time car alone for lele, either she go home first or someone will tag along in the ride. Even if the location is sheltered, there is no reason to leave our doggies in the car.

So I came across this tweet on My Dog Is Cool yesterday. I decide to make a pledge and hope every dog owners who care for their furkid to do so. Let’s spread the words, so is your dog cool today? 🙂

My Dog Is Cool!

Because I pledge never to leave Le Le 乐乐 in a hot car! We will help spread the word to others and save lives.

Man’s Best Friends

Me and CS watched a television program the day before (Monday) called the “Most Outrageous Pets”. It’s an eye-opener to know there are so many amazing dogs and unbelievable dog services provided outside of our Singapore. I realised there were so many doggies being part of Guinness world records holder too. I did mentioned one of them Puggy the Pekingnese Pup in my earlier post. Check out the other interesting doggies that have blown me away on the show.

“The World’s Tallest Dog” (2004 Guinness Book of World Records)

Gibson is a Harlequin Great Dane at 42.6 inches (1.08 meters) tall, measured from the ground to the top of his shoulders; measured at 7 feet 1 inch (2.15 meters) all stretched out and standing on his hind legs.

“The Longest Ears on a Dog” (2004 Guinness Book of World Records)

Tigger, a bloodhound have the longest ears on a dog measured 34.9 cm (13.75 in) and 34.2 cm (13.5 in) for the right and left ears, respectively.

But the most outstanding and memorable dog I reckon is ……

ELWOOD. He is an all American MUTT – part Chinese Crested part Chihuahua who came in as 2007 winner of the World’s Ugliest Dog Contest. He is special and unique in his way and I salute to Elwood’s owner, Karen in her efforts by giving back to society. What she has done with Elwood by spreading awareness of Homeless Animals and those with Special Needs is incontestable. She even had a book written called “Everyone Loves Elwood“. Their story touches my heart especially having the kids to see the other side of beauty. I recalled on the TV show, one of the sweet little girls said, “Elwood should be the world’s cutest dog.” It simply melts my heart hearing that.

We Love Elwood Too!!!

Tongue Twister

April 24, 2011 Leave a comment

Do you realise Le Le has a distintive feature among the photos?

Yes, it’s her long tongue. Her tongue seems to grow when she get exhausted. It looks exceptionally long for her build and once bitten herself while playing in the field.

But lele’s distintive tongue is no match for Puggy the Pekingese Pup. Puggy has the Guinness World Record for the longest dog tongue measuring 4.5 inches (11.43cm) long. WOW…. More importantly, Puggy has a family who loves and adore him regardless of his imperfection. Beauty lies in the eye of beholder. I give my utmost respect to Puggy family and wishes them all the best and Puggy happily always.
